TDS or tax deducted at source is widely known in the case of salaried employees, as it becomes difficult for the Income tax authorities to collect tax from individuals separately, so they collect it through single authorities like companies in salary payments, banking institutions in interest payments, and so on.
At the time of filing income tax returns, you show earned income via various sources, like the lottery, interest on investments, gifts, capital gains, etc. It is necessary to evaluate what amount of money that needs to be paid as tax for a particular financial year after deductions of TDS already.

Before understanding how to check TDS status online, let’s understand thoroughly under which receipts category your TDS might have been deducted in said financial year.
In these above-mentioned receipts, the TDS might have been deducted. When living in a digital era, where everything can be done digitally, you can check your TDS status online. You can check it in an online e-filing portal provided by the income tax department of India.

At the end of every financial year, employers give employees a Form 16 in which TDS deposits and deductions-related details are given. However, in the case of non-salaried employees, such as professionals or business persons can check their TDS status through the e-filing portal by following the below-mentioned steps.

Step 1

Visit the e-filing portal of the income tax department by clicking on the following link-

You need to fill up relevant details like PAN card number and password if you are already registered to the portal or filed an income tax return before. In this case, if this is the first time you need to register by using the PAN card details.

It can get registered through an Aadhaar card linked with the registered mobile number or email address with the PAN card. Lastly, enter the OTP received in the registered mobile number, your registration in the portal is done.

Step 2

After logging in to your account or registering yourself in the portal, you need to go to “My Account” and click on “Form 26AS” in which all of the TDS details are kept.

Step 3

On the next page, you have to enter the assessment year. The assessment year is the year in which you have to pay tax on the income earned in the previous year.

For example, if you have an earned income year starting from 1st April 2021 and ending on 31st March 2022, then the financial year is 2021-2022 and assessment year will be 2022-2023.

After entering the assessment year, you will be able to see all of TDS status for the said assessment year. You can reconcile tax with TDS and claim a refund if you have an arguable reason to do so.

Reconciliation is a part of financial statements no matter if you are in the business or an employee. Tax reconciliation will help you in keeping track of the contribution toward the economy and save taxes that the government facilitates you. Claiming a refund is the right of every individual paying tax.
